Did I mention the loads of updates? I'm pretty sure I did, oh, hmmm, yes, definitely.

ROOT! have a website! It's here: roottheband.com.au, take a look (then come back to where its comfortable, then take another look) because there's actually some pretty neat stuff there. Like the audio for the Surface Paradise trailer.

ROOT! have a video! It's here: on YouTube and here: in HQ.

ROOT! were on telly! Watch here: on YouTube or here: in HD.

ROOT! have tour dates! They're up above where they usually nestle.

ROOT! released their album! It has words and music combined. Apparently some people like it, because its rocketing up the charts.

And ROOT! got recorded! Brendan from Turn It Up!! recorded ROOT! live at The Troubadour (September 6, 2008) and has kindly allowed us to host a torrent of the set. To download the concert, first grab µTorrent (a program which understands torrents) and then grab either the flac version or the mp3 version. Most of you will want the mp3 version.

As usual, stay tuned for more news, give or take the 'new' part. Coming soon: updates with more links!

For a brief period, on the 25th of this month, a smattering of ROOT! fans were granted a brief listen to the upcoming album. The three-and-a-half minute long "trailer" was soon after removed from the official ROOT! MySpace page. For those of you who missed it, you can check out the lyrics here.

June 25, 2009

If you happened to tune into Spicks and Specks last night, you would have noticed an ubundance of people who aren't ROOT! - their scheduled appearance has been pushed back from the 24th to next month, at July 29th.

In the mean time, you can read an article DC Root has penned for The Scrivener's Fancy about his experience at and writing for the Sounds of Spring festival. The article is readable online here.

ROOT! will once again be gracing the stage with an appearance at The Curtin Bandroom on July 10, 2009. You should expect to hear very polished versions of their newer tracks, as the band is heading out of the studio in order to release their second album Surface Paradise on July 30. ROOT! fans can expect an as-yet-unannounced pre-order deal, which is rumoured to be a full length CD of unreleased music.

So, to summarise - ROOT! live at the Curtin Bandroom, July 10. ROOT! on Spicks and Specks July 29th and the release of Surface Paradise to follow on July 30th.

Plus national tour dates in September. Stay tuned for further details.

Happy two year anniversary of the first ROOT! concert ever, fellow ROOT! fans.

Not much official word from the band recently, but we hear big gears turning at the head quarters with regards to the upcoming album Surface Paradise. Until further news is announced, be sure not to forget to see ROOT! for their first televised performance on Spicks and Specks, 8.30pm next Wednesday on ABC.

Recently spotted in Inpress magazine (issue 1066, Wednesday 8th Arpil 2009) was this update for the Northcote Social Club which holds a place for the upcoming ROOT! gig there on the 2nd of May. Click the image to see the rest of the ad, or go to the Northcote's website for a more up-to-date listing. There are two warm up acts for the night, and they are Tony Johannsen & The Land of Plenty along with Xana.

Recent updates to Facebook and the Northcote website indicate that the forthcoming album has returned to its former name of Surface Paradise instead of the rumoured Root Is The Money Of All Evil.

ROOT! explained.

“Being D.C. Root, the singer, rantwriter and leader of new Melbourne group Root! would be an exhausting life. I don’t know how many original, articulate and social based thoughts you would have each day. I think maybe two. Is that close? I’m talking about fully mapped out social theories; not just what pisses you off on tele or in the paper or at work, but a complete guide as to why it pisses you off, how that piss-off fits into the grand scheme of piss-offs, and all explained in supremely colourful language. Maybe it’s closer to two a year.

D.C. Root has one a second.”

Rave Magazine, Brisbane

“ROOT! are awesome. Putting it simply. DC’s lyricism is a prime factor in the band’s growing popularity. The man is the sharpest wordsmith in Australia.”

www.thedwarf.com.au

“DC Root’s turn of phrase makes Oscar Wilde sound as exciting as the phone book”

Beat Magazine, Melbourne

Who is ROOT!?

DC Root is this country’s most original, articulate, angry, funny singer/songwriter/spoken word artist. His band contains two former members of Ice Cream Hands, a German-born movie soundtrack composer and a keyboard prodigy who has played with the likes of Eric Burdon and Crowded House. And there’s DC’s past, which he does not discuss. ROOT! is unlike any of these artists.

What is ROOT!?

“Garage punk poets.” That’s how they are introduced on their forthcoming appearance on Spicks and Specks.

ROOT! is a raucous, melodic, hard-rocking bar band with lyrics that defy categorisation – by turns fun, savage, cerebral and allusive or drenched in dry colloquial coarseness.

Why is ROOT!?

ROOT! appear onstage in cowboy hats - but they are not a country band. ROOT! shows include spontaneous, rambling, funny monologues and moments of unexpected performance art - but they are not a comedy act. ROOT! is not nostalgia, novelty, pisstake or parody. ROOT! has a growing cult following nationally, based on the fact that, unlike most press releases, all of this is true.

Where is ROOT!?

ROOT! is currently finishing their new album, scheduled for release in July. It is a 16 track song cycle called “Surface Paradise” which DC Root describes as “bombastic, romantic misanthropy. Like an unknown, uglier brother of Bono.”

ROOT!’s appearance on Spicks and Specks is scheduled for June 24.

ROOT! are playing a limited series of live dates before returning to recording. They will appear Saturday May 2nd at the Northcote Social Club.

If you managed to miss the Melbourne University gig on the 24th, then you can glean some of the events entertainment here in a series of lovely photos. More photos of the event can be viewed at the ROOT! Facebook group. And speaking of photographs, here is a stack of pictures from the February 6th gig to go along with a lovely little review. Thanks to CarbieWarbie for the photographs.

Yesterday, ROOT! played to a small crowd at the Melbourne University. They played "I Still Call Australia 'Ho!'" among other older tunes, along with "The Orange People" "Fuck! I'm dead!" and "Emo". Although not entirely on schedule, as predicted by Henri Root in the email announcement "Uncle Vom Vom" did make an appearance early in the set via a young girl in a marching-line of school-age walkers. The only effort made to clean the mess was one official who put the "Root now playing" sign over the top of it.

But enough about that, the gig was also the live debut of new ROOT! drummer Smiley Root. With a slightly more aggressive style than previous drummer Barnaby, he promised to bring his own style to the newer tracks and expand upon the rock stylings the band is moving into. No future gigs have yet been announced.

Apologies for the lack of updates, ROOT!ers, unfortunately The ROOT! Compendium had a bit of a meltdown during the recent "inclement weather" received in this fair state. Updates will drizzle back into a coherent stream as soon as possible. For now, a bit of catch-up.

About 10 minutes after the death throes which took the Compendium offline, DC Root spent some time (roughly 60mins) on RRR Radio. Fortunately another vigilant ROOT! fan picked up the recording. Speaking of ROOT! media, check out DC Root announcing the ROOT! YouTube Channel here in glorious video format.

News of a new gig is afoot and will take place almost immediately after this post has been written. It will be at Melbourne University. Where? North Court off Swanston Street. According to the release. Expect to see the newer songs and the brand new songs premiered at the last two gigs.

More updates soon.
